I can't imagine extracting the lock washer in a countersunk faucet (like on a granite counter) without this tool. You may need a wrench or pliers to turn the tool once it is locked on the washer. I used vice grips.

The tool was necessary to remove the cartridge. It's a must have to remove and install the cartridge. PlumberSurplus.com is great. I had the tool and the cartridge in two days and they had the best price for both. My local plumbing supply didn't have the cartridge or the tool. Go figure.

I struggled for three days to get the cartridge out of an old Mohen faucet. I went to numerous hardware stores and nobody had a tool that would work. I finally broke down and ordered this and I am so glad that I did. It is worth every penny. It makes the job so much easier and in using it, you won't ruin your cartridge. I highly recommend it.

Don't mess up your faucet by trying to use the wrong tool. If this is one called for with your installation use it. It is cheap and very easy to use. Directions come with the Moen 1224 cartridges and are on the web site. With the tool the whole job takes a couple of minutes.
